While the online sign-up page provides a space for your contacts to enter their name, you may want to collect your contacts' names when they're texting in an opt-in keyword to subscribe as well.
First Reply as Name
Your Mobile Text Alerts account can be enabled with a feature that will take the first message people respond back to one of your texts and will capture it as their name in your system.
For example, you could set up an auto-response for your opt-in keyword (see the article on opt-in keywords here) that says something like, "Reply back with your name." Then whatever people respond with will be captured as their name.
So, if your keyword was "Sale" on the number 74121, the workflow might look like this:
- Your contact would text the world "Sale" to 74121 to subscribe.
- The contact would receive whatever auto-response you set up, which may include "Reply back with your name."
- The contact responds back their name, "John Smith."
- John Smith would then be automatically added as their name in your database.
If you'd like to get your account enabled with this feature, let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can get you set up!
Text in to Longcode
Another way that contacts can input their name is by texting in to our system's longcode instead of using your shortcode.
Your account will come with at least 1 free keyword on a shortcode (5-digit number) and most of our customers prefer to use the shorter number to get people to subscribe. (For example, "Text 'sale' to 74121 to subscribe," etc.). But your account also includes a free keyword on our long 10-digit number 662-200-4303.
If someone is texting in a keyword to the longcode number they can include their name in the following format: Keyword FirstName LastName.
For example, if "sale" was your keyword, people could text "Sale John Smith" to the number 662-200-4303. They would then be added to your contact list and their name would be designated as John Smith in your system.
This method of collecting contacts' names only works through using the 662-200-4303 text-in number.
(You can view and change what your longcode text-in number is under your Settings.)
